Figurative Paintings
Art has been an integral part of my life since I was a very small child in Alaska. My identity and experience as a female of color sit squarely with my having become an artist that works fluidly between disciplines, is a curious creative and thinker, a passionate, committed and prolific maker ... it is a natural progression ... I am blessed.
My practice has evolved to include an increasingly broad repertoire as an award-winning visual artist. I love to travel and draw from a wide resource of experience, insight and connection in doing what I believe that I was born to do.. creating to express and tangibly manifest my perceptions which brings great joy, solace and satisfaction to my inner child. Along this journey I have been influenced by a kaleidoscope of cultural nuances that are relative to my lineage, my associations and surrounding environments. I have extensive experience in two and three-dimensional Fine Art and well over two decades of familiarity, participation and facilitation with the Arts & Culture in the Midwest in accompaniment with a long history of committed resourcefulness, passion and stewardship in the visual and literary arts fields. I am a maker who prefers to fashion visual works in series, and use innate talents to create outputs that push the boundaries of creativity... I absolutely love what I do!
My creative research explores subjects of the Divine Feminine implemented in lushly rich 2-dimensional, organic, ethereal 3-dimensional forms from the perspective of contemporary women of color and their ancestral, spiritual connectivity within the context of African and Afro-Latin Diasporic cultures and complexities of the divine feminine. My compelling narrative paintings are influenced by social issues, colorism, identity nuances, Négritude, stereotypical assumptions, indigenous wisdom's-folklore, nature, ancestral and spiritual memory... Ritual, myth and magic, depicting females who are in a state of self-discovery, insight, mystery, empowerment and affirmation.
I often use symbolism and reflections of African, Native Alaskan and Taino cultures in this work. My repertoire of artworks have been exhibited internationally, featured in an episode on HGTV's "That's Clever!", and on the DIY Network, both are syndicated international television media. I have been honored to have my work showcased in a WFYI - TV 20~PBS movie, exhibited in major museums, prominent galleries and art institutions and have been blessed to have garnered numerous awards and accomplishments.
