EXHIBITION:
I have traveled a diverse creative journey influenced by a kaleidoscope of cultural nuances. In addition to my art practice, I currently work as an arts administrator, facilitator, journalist and free-lance in a number of arts disciplines throughout the Midwest and beyond. As a self-taught artist, I work from a diverse repertoire, this lends to my being a prolific practicing creative. I have been a vocal advocate for the Arts, Arts Inclusion and for Artists' of Color for decades and am an active member of a number of local, regional, national and International arts organizations.
The signature figurative sculptural work that I create is organic, extremely detailed and textural, resulting in ethereal pieces evocative of ancient entities with some of the techniques relating to ethnic craft archetypal of ancient West Africa. I am also known for creating compelling signature, two-dimensional narrative paintings which address my lineal connection to and illuminate the importance of African American, AFRO-Latina/o Women in the context of the African-Diasporic culture and the divine feminine/Women's art of the Diaspora.
This work is reflective investigation/interpretation of the feminine as a physical/spiritual entity that possesses the potential to be relevant, powerful, nurturing.. limitless... while proudly baring the physical and emotional detritus from life's survival and ties to the past...Womankind transcending/exceeding a physical being through the exploration of philosophical, psychological consciousness. I employ identity, women's issues, colorism, Négritude, stereotypical assumptions, emotion, indigenous wisdom's-folklore, ritual, myth, magic, ceremony, ancestral memory and nature... the sensual, spiritual and the sacred manifest as material in the construct of my works as well as traditional and original personal symbolism, aesthetic references and reflective imagery pervasive of African, American, Native Alaskan and Taino cultures.
In fashioning my pieces, I utilize a wide spectrum of media and materials (steel to stone/paint to paper) integrating vibrant hues, organic patinas, complex surfaces and incised reliefs, handwrought treatments and emphasized textures. I have also brought facets of my complex textural metalwork to my exclusive artisan "Statement" design jewelry line which feature hand-forged non ferrous metals, semi-precious stones and mixed-media.. that speak in bold character and substantial elements, capturing the spirit of the contemporary woman seeking pieces of distinction in wearable artistry.
My award-winning work has been exhibited internationally, and I have participated in national group exhibitions. Select pieces of my work are held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean including the Charles H. Wright Museum _Detroit, MI., Winona Hospital _Indianapolis, IN., the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette _IN. The Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center _IN., and the internationally syndicated Home and Garden Television (HGTV).
