Title: IN BETWEEN PURGATORY ~ LEARNING TO FLY - SWAY Series:
My visual practice and creative research explores subjects of the Divine Feminine from the perspective of women of color and their ancestral, spiritual, contemporary and naturalistic connectivity resulting in highly worked, complex organic bodies of 3-dimensional sculptural pieces spanning Goddess persona predecessor archetypes linking to contemporary assimilation and connection within the context of African and Afro-Latin Diasporic cultural narratives that I imbue into my art-pieces. This work is interpreted through the lens of womanism, feminism and collective knowledge depicting allegorical females in a state of self-discovery, insight, mystery, empowerment and affirmation and the connections to a transcendent and physical place.
This work is reflective investigation of the feminine as a physical/spiritual entity which possesses the potential to be relevant, powerful, nurturing.. limitless... while proudly baring the physical and emotional detritus from life's survival and ties to the past.. Womankind transcending/exceeding a physical being through the exploration of philosophical, psychological consciousness.
I employ identity, women's issues, stereotypical assumptions, emotion, indigenous wisdom's-folklore, ceremony, nature, ancestral and spiritual memory... Ritual, myth and magic, depicting a state of self-discovery, insight, mystery, empowerment and affirmation.
The sensual and the sacred manifest as material in the construct of my works as well as traditional and original personal symbolism, aesthetic references and imagery.
My 3-dimensional figurative work is extremely detailed, organic with complex surface treatments. These sculptural pieces center upon my contemporary perception of indigenous ethnic familiarities and ancestral, transcendent entities which bring an ethereal, otherworldly quality to my pieces. I enjoy making a large portion of this signature work utilizing mixed media and facilitate this by deploying a wide array of traditional and unconventional materials "steel to stone - paint to paper." I use hand wrought and smithed metals, extremely detailed and incised, featuring chased and repousse'd metal accents or hand worked metal or mixed media embellishment.
