Literary work includes:
Published Journalist, Arts Editor, Columnist, Poet and Author.
As an award winning published writer I have for over two decades researched, sought out and cultivated aspiring novice, newly-discovered, emergent and early-career artists to expose their creativity through writing, photographic documentation and eventually by exhibiting their work in professional venues through my initiative "FLAVA FRESH ! "an award-winning exhibition series platform of over twenty years and by exposing their creative life stories, events and achievements in numerous Midwestern regional, national and international print and online media.
I have been involved in grass roots arts efforts, the non-for-profit sector and community service in the Midwest for decades. I am a regional arts grants panelist, an adjudicator and a noted speaker. An arts activist I am widely known in the region for having acquired a well-earned reputation as being driven and making things happen for under-represented artists in the area and I continue to be a vital force in the exhibition and scholarship of twenty first century art.
As a writer, I received a Marguerite Press Literary Award in 2003, and in 2011 was honored with an Indiana Arts Commission ~ Individual Artist Project Grant (IAP) Award in the Literary category. The resulting 2012 inaugural volume of "HORIZON: CONTEMPORARY INDIANA ARTISTS' OF COLOR" showcases marginalized artists who reside and practice in Indiana.
This first volume in an ongoing series was created to bring about more interest and exposure for Indiana native or resident Artists of Color practicing visual art disciplines, and to provide crucial documentation of their existence. This platform came about due to my research which found a critical lack of information in regard to contemporary African American/Artists' of Color being documented, archived or having work available or on view in major or minor arts-related institutions in Indiana. I also comprehended that "documentation" is the key to an artists existence in history and had the realization that there is a definitive need for information about this specific underrepresented segment of visual artists...for educational purposes, historical archiving, as well as to honor a valuable segment of Indiana's population who have a long, rich creative and cultural heritage.
I believe that Art created by modern Artists' of Color has for too long been dismissed on the one hand as being limited, naïve, and/or derivative, and on the other regarded as an anthropological curiosity worthy only of dusting off and bringing out of the cupboards and attics once a year during Black History Month.
HORIZON: Contemporary Indiana Artists' Of Color, was purchased by the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library (IMCPL / INDYPL), and is included in their permanent collection. It is showcased in the "Nina Mason Pulliam Indianapolis Special Collections Room" within the main library. The books are available to the public through the catalog system.
My latest publication, "On Being A Visual Artist: Create, Expose, Grow, Accomplish ~ Guidance To Thrive and Survive", a practical and informative guide to independent artist development was unveiled and featured in the Central Indianapolis Public Libraries 2020 presentation of Meet The Artists' XXXII, an annual Arts & Cultural extravaganza held each February through March in Indianapolis, Indiana. This insightful publication is focused on advice suitable to both aspiring beginner and early career professional artists to help them to establish a sustainable career. Chapters cover; Understanding the journey, creation of work, getting into shows, exhibiting, the money aspect, audience targeting, interaction with the gallerists - public - potential clients, PR, branding, traditional and digital marketing, career strategizing, monetization of your work, media networking, and just about every other aspect of the process of structuring a presence and profile in the visual arts industry.
